How do derivative traders work

Similar to a cash trader, derivatives traders also work with both sell-side and buy-side firms. For example, at a buy-side firm such as a hedge fund, the derivatives trader will execute buy/sell orders for the fund managers. In a sell-side firm, such as a brokerage firm, they will execute customers orders. The derivatives market is where these instruments are traded. Usually, the underlying assets used in derivatives are bonds, stocks, commodities, currencies, market indexes, and interest rates. The derivatives market is either for over-the-counter derivatives or exchange-traded ones.
